How to choose a rug size

  • Measure your space first. Outlining the size on the floor with masking tape is an easy way to see how it will look.
  • Living room: leave about 12–18 in of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Many people like the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on the rug.
  • Bedroom: a rug under the bed should extend past the sides, so your feet land on something soft when you get up.
  • Dining area: choose a rug big enough that chairs stay on it when they're pulled out.
  • Bedside, entryway or reading nook: a smaller rug works well on its own.
